Delay in issuing 2006/07 e-filing incentive cheques

It is not yet obligatory from small employers (i.e. those with less than 50 employees) to file their end-of-year employer returns electronically. But to encourage electronic filing, those who e-filed successfully for 2006/07 are entitled to a tax free payment of £150. This can be offset against future payments of PAYE or employers can request a cheque.

However there are delays in issuing these cheques. In a recent news item HMRC apologised for the delay, which it says is due to a large number of claims for a cheque payment which are taking a while to work through. HMRC says: ‘it may take until December before you get your cheque’.
HMRC also points out that it cannot issue a cheque if the employer has any PAYE returns or liabilities outstanding.
